The small uncertain reward and why it holds

Sometimes something good is more compelling than always something good.

If every check produced something worthwhile, the habit would be rational and unremarkable. If none did, it would fade quickly. The powerful arrangement is the one in between: mostly nothing, occasionally something that genuinely matters. Unpredictability of that kind is far stickier than reliability. It keeps a small live question running in the background, and background questions are expensive because they never fully close.

You can feel this in the physical restlessness that shows up when something is unresolved and unreachable. It is not a strong feeling. It is a low, persistent one, and it competes with whatever you are trying to hold in your head. That competition is the actual cost. Not the minutes spent looking, but the fraction of you that stays partly allocated to the looking even when you are not.

Understanding the mechanism does not dissolve it, and anyone who claims otherwise has not tested the claim. What understanding does provide is a target. The problem is the openness of the question, not the content behind it. Anything that closes the question, even temporarily and even arbitrarily, buys back the fraction that was standing by.
