Do the demanding thing before anything else touches you

Order is one of the few free levers available.

If capacity varies through a day and the beginning is generally less encumbered than the end, then order becomes a lever that costs nothing. Doing the demanding thing first is not about virtue or early rising. It is about placing the work that needs the most where the most is available, before the day has had a chance to spend it on things that would have managed fine without it.

The obstacle is that the beginning of a day is also when everything else feels most urgent. The queue of arrived things is sitting there, visible and answerable, and clearing it produces an immediate sense of order. So the good capacity goes into the easy work, and the hard work waits until the capacity is gone. This trade happens quietly, every day, and rarely gets examined.

The adjustment is deliberately modest: not a whole reordered morning, but a single stretch at the front of the day that belongs to the difficult thing, before the queue is opened. Most of what is in the queue will be equally answerable an hour later. Very little of it turns out to have been urgent in the way it felt. What does turn out to matter is that the hard thing got the version of you that could actually do it.
